Naval Blockades Capture of Port Royal allowed the Union to blockade Charleston and Savannah Any boat coming in or out of a southern port would be stopped Confederates built smaller, faster boats called Blockade runners Able to get around large battleships Were able to trade with British islands

vessel sank following the attack The Confederates lost 21 crewmen in three sinkings during the CSS Hunley's career.

Housatonic stationed at the entrance to Charleston harbor, Hunley attacked In an effort to break the naval blockade Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers embedded the torpedo into her hull The torpedo was detonated as the submarine backed away, sending Housatonic and five of her crew to the bottom in five minutes
