22. Ana wanted a hamster more than anything else in the world. Her friend Beth had a hamster named Harry. Harry was brown and white, and he loved to munch carrots from Beth's hand. Ana had asked for a hamster for her birthday, but all she got was a card game and a new book. Those were good presents, but they were NOT a hamster. Ana had said thank you with a big pout. "Ana," her mother had said, "having a pet is a big responsibility. Pets have lots of needs. Hamsters need shelter, and do you know what they eat and drink?" Ana did know. She had been paying close attention to how Beth took care of Harry. She just needed a way to show her mom she was ready for a pet. One day Beth and her family went out of town.
