Our perceptions often causes stereotyping.
Stereotyping: Assuming that all members of a demographic category are alike in all respects. Why do we stereotype? How can we overcome stereotyping? *Shoe activity Each group will get a “shoe.” Fill out the questions on your worksheet. Present story of person to the class. Activity: Once groups have created and presented their stories, read the “real” stories and ask the following questions. 1. Why were the group stories so different from the actual stories? 2. What does it mean to “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?” 3. Why must we consider things from someone else’s point of view before forming an opinion or passing judgment?

Fun with perception Perception involves looking deeper into a person, situation, image, or any aspect of society. Our perception shapes our communication in how we choose what to say (encoding and message) and how we interpret (decoding) what others say and do. It’s important to be open minded and try to see beyond what’s right in front of us on the surface.
