Henry IV (Bourbon)- converted to Catholicism to bring peace and unity to France.
Edict of Nantes- freedom of worship and political rights and ended religious wars.
Problems: nobles had weakened the central gov't and unfair taxation.

8. A. Cardinal Richelieu
1. Henry IV was murdered and his son Louis XIII took over.
2. Louis XIII put trust in ministers- Cardinal Richelieu.
a. Richelieu believed that the king was supreme and he wanted to take power away from nobles.
b. He led raids of the Huguenots (French Protestants) to regain power.
c. Intendants- monarch's agents that handled provinces.

9. B. The Thirty Years' War
1. Protestant rebellion against the Holy Roman Empire.
2. Richelieu saw it as an opportunity to strengthen France a. European countries became weak from fighting as the French stayed out.
3. Treaty of Westphalia- ended the war

A. Versailles- large palace that caused debt
1. Divine Right of Kings- God had chosen him to rule.
2. Louis XIV, with the advice from Jean Baptiste Colbert, was able to:
a. Increase industry
b. Colonize overseas- West Indies, Canada, and East Indies.
c. Establish a strong monarchy.
3. He did away w/ the Edict of Nantes, which ended France's toleration of Protestants.
