2 Civil Rights Amendments
KEY QUESTION Which groups of people were left out of the original Constitution? How did the Civil Rights Amendments fix these injustices? Give three examples.

4 Civil Rights Amendments
13th Amendment - RATIFIED (approved) in 1865, outlawed slavery in the United States.

5 Civil Rights Amendments
14th Amendment - Ratified in 1868, this granted full citizenship to African-Americans. This did not include Native-Americans because at the time they could not become citizens.

6 Civil Rights Amendments
The 2nd clause guarantees that no state can take away the rights of a U.S. citizen. Civil Rights Amendments 14th Amendment

7 Voting Rights Amendments
SUFFRAGE - (Fighting for the right to vote).

8 Voting Rights Amendments
15TH Amendment - Ratified in 1870, this guaranteed that any man, black or white, shall be allowed to vote.

10 Voting Rights Amendments
17th Amendment – Ratified in State LEGISLATORS (elected representatives who make laws) elected U.S. Senators.

11 Voting Rights Amendments
People could directly choose their two U.S. Senators.

12 Voting Rights Amendments
19th Amendment – This enabled women in the U.S. to vote regardless of the state that they lived in. Prior to this amendment, several states did allow women the right to vote.

13 Civil Rights Amendments
23rd Amendment People in Washington DC could now vote in national elections.

14 Civil Rights Amendments
24th Amendment - Ratified in 1964. Forbade the use of a POLL TAX (fee charged for voting), LITERACY TESTS (proof that a person can read or write) or any other restriction to voting other than proof of citizenship.

15 Civil Rights Amendments
The 24th Amendment is one of the things that Rev. Martin Luther King and thousands of others were fighting for.

16 Civil Rights Amendments
26th Amendment - The voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1971.

17 Civil Rights Amendments
