Arousal and Performance
Optimal level Arousal
12
Control of Emotions Arousal and Performance Different Players have different arousal levels
This is an old model on the link between performance and motivation– achieving optimum performance is probably not as simple as it is portrayed here - but it is a good starting point for this discussion. Different players are affected in different ways in terms of preparing for games. Tease the EXTERNAL and INTERNAL factors out in discussion and put them on the flip chart: External Factors (may include): Environment – stadium Crowds – spectator interaction Media interest Stage of the competition Weather Opposition Team mates Event and its importance Internal Factors (may include) Motivation Interest Belief Sense of team ship and belonging Confidence Ability and skill level Will to win and succeed Different players will react in different ways depending on their experience, their ability and their Motivation. The implication is that mangers need to be aware and manage this to ensure the performance is maximised.
