1 DO NOW Pick up notes and handout. Do Ion Formation Sheet NOW.
Handout is due tomorrow.

2 ION FORMATION H O P Li F S Be Na Cl B Mg K C Al Sr N Si In Element
Valence Ion Formed H O P Li F S Be Na Cl B Mg K C Al Sr N Si In

3 CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE
Ionic, Covalent, and Acidic Compounds

4 NAMING COMPOUNDS AND FORMULAS - NOMENCLATURE
Three Goals: Interpret information given by a chemical formula Write formulas for various compounds Name compounds given a formula A chemical formula tells: What type of atoms are present. The number of each type of atom present. Ratio of one atom to another. Al2O3

5 NAMING COMPOUNDS AND FORMULAS - NOMENCLATURE
Before naming a compound, you must determine which category it fits into: Ionic Molecular Acid Organic (we will not be naming organic compounds)

6 IONIC NOMENCLATURE contains cations (+)and anions(-).
Are solids, includes metals and nonmetals. Metals go first in name and formula. A formula unit is the smallest whole number ratio of cations to anions.

7 IONIC NOMENCLATURE PRACTICE: Which symbol goes first?
S and Cu d. C and Mg Bi and S e. Ta and Cl c. N and Nb f. Al and As

8 NAMING SIMPLE IONIC COMPOUNDS
FIRST: Write the name of the cation (metal). SECOND: Write the name of the anion (ends in “ide”).

9 PRACTICE A. CaF2 E. BeS B. CaCl2 F. Al2S3 C. MgBr2 G. NaF D. BeO
H. K2O

10 WRITING SIMPLE IONIC FORMULAS
Write the charge for the element over the name. You determine the charge by looking at your ion sheet or by just using the periodic table. Write the symbol for the cation, then the symbol for the anion.

11 DETERMINING THE CHARGE
Monatomic Ions An ion with only one atom; Mg+2, Na+1, O-2 Most of the charges can be determined by the atom’s position on the periodic table.

12 WRITING SIMPLE IONIC FORMULAS
Balance the charges (use the crisscross method) by placing subscripts. Net charges must be zero. Use your ion sheet or your knowledge of the periodic table to get charges.

13 PRACTICE lithium fluoride barium fluoride lithium chloride
barium iodide lithium bromide barium oxide lithium oxide Barium sulfide lithium sulfide Aluminum oxide
