5 STATE OF KANSAS LAW K.S.A. 72-8256 requires three basic elements for schools:
Adopt a district-wide policy to prohibit bullying and now must address cyberbullying Create bullying implementation plans Train all staff and students in bullying prevention September, 2011

6 WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is any ongoing (repeated) physical or verbal mistreatment where there is: - An imbalance of power and - The target is exposed repeatedly to negative actions on the part of one or more other students (Olweus 1986, 1991 and 1993) September, 2011

7 CYBERBULLYING “Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.” – Bill Belsey September, 2011

Instant messaging (IM) Cell phone Text messages Social network sites Chat rooms, Blogs, Bash Boards, Defamatory online personal polling web sites. September, 2011

9 The Dangers of Hyper-texting
In a research study, over 4,257 students in 20 high schools in Cleveland, Ohio were surveyed: 19.8 % of Hyper-texters (sending 120 or more texts per school day) and 11.5 % of Hyper-networkers (spending 3 or more hours on social networks per school day) were twice as likely as other teens to have tried alcohol and 43% more likely to binge-drink. September, 2011

10 The Dangers of Hyper-texting
They were 3 ½ times more likely to have had sex than other teens. They were 90% more likely to have had four or more partners. Hyper-networkers were 69% were more likely than other teens to have had sex and 60% more likely to have had four or more partners. September, 2011

Researchers stressed that texting and social networking did not cause teens to engage in risky behavior, but that excessive use of texting and social networking could be “a red flag for parents” September, 2011

12 Sexting….what is it? Sexting is the act of sending sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, primarily between cell phones. September, 2011

13 The dangers of Sexting Sending sexually explicit messages is called pornography. When pictures are received, charges of “possession” can be filed When pictures are sent, the charges become “distributing child pornography” which is a felony If convicted, individuals could potentially be made to register as a sex offender for 10 years September, 2011
