We believe we are governed by logic, but much of our behavior is emotional. We are greatly influenced by our motives, desires, needs, wants, or drives

Relate your ideas to your listeners’ motives Weight your speech with verbal support (reasons) Show your audience how this information will help them achieve their goals or satisfy their wants (emotions)

Motivate your listeners throughout your entire speech by using motive appeals which are images that stimulate audience desires

Self-preservation—the desire to survive Pride—self esteem or a feeling of personal worth Personal Enjoyment—desire for beauty, comfort, recreation Love or Affection—need to give and receive love, to have friends, to share life with others, to promote the common good Acquisition and Saving– desire for ownership Adventure and Curiosity—need for exploration Loyalty—faithfulness to nation, school, city, friends, family Imitation—need to conform Reverence—desire to look up to someone Creating—urge to invent

Select three colorful, full page advertisements from magazine and (mount these on construction paper) Identify motive appeals used in each of the three ads (write this on the back) Prepare a one minute report discussing the appeals in each advertisement
