Emergency in early church – many people in need Acts 4:36 “…Barnabas,(which is being interpreted, The son of consolation” ASV = exhortation NKJV = encouragement What name would we have ? Son of thunder Son of gossip Son of kindness Son of helpfulness

After his conversion Only Barnabas was willing to trust him Acts 9:26-27a “And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles.”

Barnabas Of Exhortation Was a good example
Acts 11: sent to Antioch 22. Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. 23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord. 24 For he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord.”

Exhortation Admonish Greek = comfort, consolation, entreaty
Vines = to admonish, to urge, to recommend, to urge forward English = persuade, urge, admonish Admonish Greek = to put in mind, to caution or reprove gently Vines = a putting in mind, warning of things that are wrong English = advise, counsel, caution, warn

Encourage Deut. 3:28 “But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him:” Hebrew = be strong, courageous, confirm, fortify Vines = to urge forward, persuade English = inspire, stimulate, persuade, influence, sway

Exhortation is a part of our work Heb. 10:24 “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: NKJV “ And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,” NASB “and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,” Provoke = to incite, stimulate, to arouse to Love one another - 1 Jn. 4:20-21 Good works

Exhortation is a part of our work Heb. 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. “ Hebrews 10:25 (ESV) “not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Admonition is a part of our work Admonish = to put in mind, caution, warn James 5: convert - hide a soul from death Warned of false teachers 2 Pet. 2:1 - there were false prophets among the people 1 John 4:1 - many false prophets gone out into the world Jude earnestly contend for the faith

Encouragement is a part of our work Encourage = to spur on, stimulate, urge forward All of us need encouragement Many causes of discouragement How can we encourage ? Be there - listen - visit - call - James 1:27 Compliment Cheer - Prov. 17:22 “A merry heart” Point to God - 2 Cor. 1:3 - “the God of all comfort”

Encouragement is a part of our work 1 Cor. 10:13 “God is faithful” “a way to escape” Heb. 13:5-6 “I will never leave you nor forsake you” Phil. 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Rom. 8:37 “we are more than conquerors” 1 Pet. 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you”

God’s Good Man Barnabas Bar = Son of Nubas = Encouragement We have all been encouraged As debtors we should also encourage others Barnabas was a man full of faith He did not wait for others to encourage him. Become a “Son of Encouragement”
