3 Today we will Discuss how parental involvement is connected to accountability at the state/federal level Discuss ideas for involving parents at the classroom, school, and district level Create texts to use when calling parents over a variety of issues Participate in a gallery walk to add your ideas for ways to involve parents in their children’s education.

4 Parental Involvement Update
Parental Involvement has long been a component in education especially if you receive Title Funds. NCLB is being phased out and ESSA is replacing it. Parental Involvement becomes even more important with ESSA due to its connection with Accountability. One domain of the new accountability will be our district’s self-report that is due in the spring. Parental Involvement will count 10% towards our district’s accountability. This domain is designed as the district’s “curve” towards our ranking. This year it will not count but beginning in it will count.

5 Ways of building relationships with parents, getting them to volunteer in your classroom, and to give you feedback Send a positive note home on one student every day. (Handout) Conduct a survey of parents to identify volunteer interests, talents and availability. (Handout) Contact parents via , text and social media. Have a clear list of ways that parents can help out. Create volunteer recognition activities such as events, certificates and thank-you cards (These can be written by the students). Create an electronic suggestion or comment box for families to anonymously provide their questions, concerns and recommendations. (Handout).

6 Specific tasks parents can do
Be a class parent. Organize an after-school homework club. Assist with extra-curricular activities such as drama clubs, civic organizations and hobby clubs. Participate in a reading partners club. Become a class adviser to assist in fundraising projects, bookkeeping and special events such as dances or class trips. Start a community book club. If an English class is reading "Great Expectations", a parent can have the community join in by gathering copies of the novel and starting an online discussion between students and parents, as everyone in the club works through the chapter assignments.

7 Specific tasks parents can do (cont.’)
Chaperone field trips or social events. Share their expertise. Some parents have very interesting jobs or life experiences. Invite them to give a presentation that can supplement a unit of study. Prepare learning materials from home. Coordinate classroom volunteers. Be in charge of: Classroom newsletter Class twitter Class blog Class website Pinterest board Google Hangouts (this is a very good way for students to connect with other students around the globe).
