2 Technology Strategy Technology is a resource that is as pervasively important in the organization as are financial and human resources. Technology The ensemble of theoretical and practical knowledge, knowhow, skills and artifacts that are used by the firm to develop, produce and deliver its product and service. Key elements : Implicit, existing only in embedded form All firms have in recent years become more aware of the critical role of technology in strategic decisions.

3 Technology Strategy An Evolutionary Process Perspective
The framework of evolutionary theory → the cultural evolutionary perspective ; Strategy-making as a social learning process Successful firms develop distinctive strategies in the course of their development and the direction of this development cannot be completely determined at the outset. Increasing the firm’s capabilities is a mechanism for stimulating strategic development.

4 Force Shaping Technology Strategy
Technology Strategy emerges from organizational capabilities, shaped by the generative forces of the firm’s strategic behavior and evolution of the technological environment, and by the interactive mechanisms of the firm’s organizational context.

5 Force Shaping Technology Strategy
Internal Forces Generative mechanism : Strategic behavior Integrative mechanism : Organizational context External Forces Generative mechanism : Technology evolution Integrative mechanism : Industry context

6 Technology Strategy Substance and Enactment
Four dimensions of the substance of technology strategy 1. Competitive positioning 2. Technology and the value chain 3. Scope of technology strategy 4. Depth of technology strategy Performance : the enactment of a strategy 1. Acquisition 2. Development 3. Support

7 Conclusion Central to this idea is the notion that the reality of a strategy lies in its enactment, not in those pronouncements that appear to assert it. A second central idea in this paper is that the on-going interactions of capabilities-strategy-experience occur within a matrix of generative and integrative mechanism that shape strategy.
