Aims for lesson 6 Recap multi-store Build your own memory model!
2
Leave your 2 pieces of prep on your table so I can look at them while you are completing other tasks… Read the feedback you have been given
3
Practice question… Outline one strength and one limitation of the Multi-store memory model (4 marks) 4 marks = 5 mins
4
Activity 1: Fill in the blanks
? ? ? ? ? ? Text box Some words can be used more than once • Forgotten • Short-term memory • Attention • Sensory input • Rehearsal • Long-term memory • Sensory memory ? ? ?
5
Make your own Multi-Store Model of memory
Aim for Lesson 6
6
Take a picture at each stage
You can then make a montage of photos You can put these on a powerpoint and describe how the MSM
7
Select 3 boxes Each box will represent each store The smallest box will be the sensory register You must remove two of the ‘doors’ and cut in a hole on the base
8
Somewhere on your box I would like you to write the encoding, capacity and duration of the sensory register Encoding of SR: … Capacity of SR:… Duration of SR: ….
9
Now choose your second box…
This will be your Short-term memory You must remove both ‘doors’ You must cut in a small square on the base
10
Somewhere on your box I would like you to write the encoding, capacity and duration of the STM
Encoding of STM… Capacity of STM… Duration of STM….
11
Your last box… This will be your long-term memory store
It should be the biggest
12
I would like you to remove one of the ‘doors’ and make a small hole on the base
Somewhere on your box I would like you to write the encoding, capacity and duration of the LTM Encoding of LTM… Capacity of LTM… Duration of LTM….
13
You should make arrows of direction, “forgetting” and “rehearsal” and stick them on the boxes accordingly
14
Take your piece of paper
As soon as the information enters the sensory register, how long does it stay for? What happens if we don’t pay attention to some of the information? For example: the first four and last four digits?

Take your piece of paper
As soon as the information enters the sensory register, how long does it stay for? What happens if we don’t pay attention to some of the information? For example: the first four and last four digits? You should cut off the digits not given attention as they would be forgotten You should stick these onto your forgotten arrow
16
Take your piece of paper
When this information enters the short-term memory, it cannot all fit in the store. What can we do to make all the information fit?
17
Take your piece of paper
When this information enters the short-term memory, it cannot all fit in the store. What can we do to make all the information fit? Chunking! You should chunk the digits Since chunking improves STM, where will these chunks go? And where will the digits which cannot be chunked go?
19
Essay question Outline and evaluate the multi- store model of memory 12 marks Due: 22nd November
