A Change for Every Season Name _____________________ Class Period ________ Date _____________ SC.8.E.5.9 Lab Equipment Set up A: Construction paper on counter/table top. Lab Equipment Set up B: Measure temperature here as close to the center as possible. Hold the flashlight at the edge of the paper. You will be measuring about 2 cm inside the oval of light. Note: Review the video if you need help visualizing the oval hitting the paper. Measure temperature here as close to the center as possible. Approximately 5 cm above the paper.

A Change for Every Season Name _____________________ Class Period ________ Date _____________ SC.8.E.5.9 Materials: Interactive Notebook Lab Sheets Two pieces of Black construction paper Incandescent flashlight Infrared Temperature Sensor Timer Pencil What are the safety precautions needed for this lab activity?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From years of personal experience we know that black shirts or pants absorb heat. For that reason black construction paper will be used to see if direct or indirect light absorbs more heat. For what reason are we not using white paper or purple paper? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Look at set up A on your lab sheet. The flashlight will be held so that the temperature of direct heat can be recorded. Record your data here. Note the flashlight is straight over the paper. The temperature should be taken at the center of the light using the infrared temperature sensor. What do you notice in the temperature as each minute passes? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Should you take more data? For what reason? If you can justify taking more data do so but the activity must be finished in the allotted time. Make an additional data table on the back of this sheet. A Change for Every season Name _____________________ Class Period ________ Date _____________ SC.8.E.5.9 Hold the flashlight against one end of the second piece of black construction paper. Make an oval as you saw in the video by holding the flashlight at an angle until you have a narrow oval approximately 9 to 10 cm long. Repeat the data collection measuring the temperature in the center within 2cm of the end of the oval opposite the flashlight. What happens to the temperature as each minute passes? Should you take more data? For what reason? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ If you can justify taking more data do so but the activity must be finished in the allotted time. Make an additional data table on the back of this sheet. What did you expect to happen in data set one? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What actually happened in data set one? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What did you expect to happen in data set two? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What actually happened in data set two? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Use the data collected to speculate how this exercise relates to direct and indirect sunlight on the earth. Complete the last sheet in your lab to visualize why we have seasons. If you need to watch the video again it is set up on a classroom computer to view again. A Change for Every Season SC.8.E.5.9 Name ______________________ Class Period ______ Date _____________ Label the following on your diagram when you have finished your lab: Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, axis, direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, rotation. When you have completed your lab label summer and winter as a result of the most direct and indirect sunlight. Explain why the temperature is different in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere in this picture. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ From our previous studies explain what the orbit of the earth looks like today in the modern heliocentric model. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Use a classroom computer or your own device to determine when the sun is closest and farthest from the earth. What months are they? Do these times have special vocabulary associated with them and if so what are they?
