Assessing impacts of multiple human uses on nature values: separate and synergistic effects: the Estonian MSP perspective Jonne Kotta and many other committed colleagues

Baltic Sea Young and environmentally unstable Low salinity values
Low species and functional diversity Eutrophication is an important stress And many other pressures/human uses
3
Estonian case What are the challenges the tool seeks to address? Predict cumulative human impacts on key ecostsystem elements at spatial scale interesting for planners. What can the tool do / not to do NOW? This is a simple-to-use online portal that combines layers of key ecosystem elements and rules (knowledge) on how different human uses/pressures affect different ecosystem elements. User can draw polygons of human use, define their intensity and then portal interactively quantifies impacts at 200 m spatial scale. Interactive effects will be added later in 2018 together with many other features (user interface, uploading, links to big data) requested by the Estonian Ministry of the Finance.
4
Estonian case What COULD it do in the future? Run synoptic analyses of impacts by taking interactively account ever-changing situation in the marine realm (e.g. through links to remote sensing products and oceanographic models) in the whole Baltic Sea. Run (climate change and/or management related) scenario predictions in the whole Baltic Sea. What are the limitations for developing the tool? Our imagination (and often budget).

Ecological understanding is the key!
Bottom up control Appearance of novel functions (top-down predation) in the Baltic Sea Effects are propagating beyond the predator habitat! Top down control Ecological understanding is the key!
