1 Lesson 1.1 Evaluate Expressions
Essential Question: How do you evaluate algebraic expressions and powers?

2 Before we start… Is this an algebraic expression? Tell your partner.

3 Before we start… Is this an algebraic expression? Tell your partner.

4 What is an algebraic expression?
An expression that consists of numbers, variables, and operations. Recall a variable is a letter used to represent one or more numbers.

5 Algebraic Expression Meaning Operation 5(n) 5·n 5n 5 times n Multiplication 14y /y 14 divided by y Division 6 + c 6 plus c Addition 8 – x 8 minus x Subtraction

6 How do you evaluate an algebraic expression?
Substitute the number for the variable. Perform the operation(s). Simplify the result, if necessary.

19 Area and Volume Exponents are used in the formulas for the area of a square and the volume of a cube. In fact, the words squared and cubed come from the formula for the area of a square and the formula for the volume of a cube.

20 How do you evaluate algebraic expressions and powers?

21 Ticket Out the Door Evaluate the expression on a piece of paper (put your name on it) and place it in the box on your way out…
