PM’s – are accessible and want to help – in training, they are present at teaching, not nameless and have a ‘face’, proactive – want trainees to succeed and encourage planning for assessment early, have trust of trainees.
Peer support – is essential, knowledge gained and handed down, very useful having residential
Flexibility – both of us have transferred within the deanery which has been essential to maintaining work life balance
Interest – practice have supported me in carrying out QIP that is aligned with my own research interests

3. The Bad Too many cooks GP trainee = service provision
Confusion about training stage amongst practice staff
Many supervisors – do they know their role – and do they know your role? What are you supposed to do and when?
GP trainees – you don’t want to work in hospitals – why are you doing this rotation? Service provision? Structured placement – set learning objectives, interaction and opportunity to learn and utilise the experience to produce a more rounded, doctor, and leader.
Supporting staff members may expect same service level from you as previous trainees, who might have been 1-2 years your senior, and may be disappointed when you cannot provide

4. The Ugly Learning experiences Opportunities
Even in the darkest moments, there is always a learning opportunity and a reflection to be had!
Opportunity to interact on a local level – with trainees as peer support, medical education, audits, quality improvement projects, clinical roles and specialist interests, presentations, conferences, college work – and further a field supporting a wider network – such as exchanges.
We are your doctors of the future – when you retire, we will be your doctors, and your children’s doctors and possibly your grandchildren’s doctors!
