Bell Ringer 1-11-11 What is the formula for speed?
What is an example unit for speed? Give an example of something that has speed. What type of graph shows speed? What does a straight sloped line tell you in a distance-time graph?

Objectives ALCOS Objective # 1 ALCOS Objective # 8
Identify steps within the scientific process Applying process skills to interpret data from graphs. ALCOS Objective # 8 Identify Newton’s three laws of motion.
4
Speed The distance traveled by the time it takes to travel the distance is called speed. The formula for speed is: Speed = distance or s = d time t In SI units, speed is measured in meters per second (m/s).
5
An object in motion can change its speed many times as it moves from one point to another, speeding up or slowing down.
6
Average speed is the total distance traveled divided by the total time taken.
Example: Total distance = 32 km + 13 km = Total time = 2 h + 1 h = Average Speed = 45 km = 3 h
7
An object’s speed at a particular moment, or instant, in time is called instantaneous speed.
8
Constant speed occurs when an object travels at a steady rate with the same speed for a period of time.
9
Velocity Velocity is the speed of an object in a given direction. (Ex. 30 km/h north) Velocity changes if either or both of these change (speed or direction).
10
Slope Slope is the steepness of a line on a graph.
It tells you how fast one variable changes in relation to the other variable in the graph. In other words, the slope tells you the rate of change.
11
Formula slope = rise run
