1 Welcome to Language Arts- Come in, sharpen pencils and sit down.
Setting and Conflict Welcome to Language Arts- Come in, sharpen pencils and sit down.

2 Warm Up 1. After Gears of Pain 6 came out, the amount of people playing Gears of Pain 5 declined. 2. Alvin went to the museum every Saturday because he was so fascinated by art. 3. Even though John had a good job and a nice family, he yearned for more. 4. Since professional athletes have to stay in peak physical shape, most athletes seldom eat junk food.

3 Setting The setting describes where an when the story takes place.
It helps build background and create images in the mind. It helps set the tone or mood of the story. Details can describe: Time of day Time of year Time in History Scenery Weather Location Walsh Publishing Co. 2009

4 Using the Five Senses A good setting helps the reader visualize the places in the story. A good author includes descriptions of the setting using the five senses… SIGHT SMELL TASTE FEEL SOUND Walsh Publishing Co. 2009

5 Take a Look…Which is better?
The castle was beside the water. OR… The waves crashed loudly against the shoreline. The fog lifted lightly and the medieval castle came into view. It was a beautiful site! The fog brushed my face and I could smell the smoke from the fire in the distance and taste the sea salt on my lips. Walsh Publishing Co. 2009

6 Your Turn… On the next slide, there is a picture of a setting.
In your own words, write a detailed description of the setting in your picture. Include many adjectives and don’t forget to include descriptions for each of the five senses: see, hear, feel, smell, taste.

7

8 All Summer in A Day As we read the story, use the organizer to jot down words and phrases that paint a picture of the setting.

9 Ticket Out Think of a place you have been. Describe it on the note card so that I can try and guess the place and time of year.

10 Extension: Draw your own setting and then write about it.
Extension: Your teacher will give you a magazine to look through. Find a picture that could be a setting for a story.
