Bellwork A pass at a water park is $58 at the beginning of the season. The cost of the pass decreases each month. 1. Each month 10% is taken off the price of a season pass. Find the discounted price for August by completing the fill-ins below. 2. Multiply 0.9 and $ How does the result compare to your answer in number 1? 3. Write the definition of discount in your own words.

Find sale price and original price
Discount or markdown is the amount by which the regular price of an item is reduced. The sales price is the regular price MINUS the discount.

Example 1 A DVD normally costs $22. This week it is on sale for 25% off the original price. What is the sale price of the DVD? Method 1: Subtract the discount from the regular price. First, find the amount of the discount. Let d, represent the discount. Part = percent x whole d = 0.25 x 22 d = 5.50 Next, subtract the discount from the regular price. $22 – 5.50 = $16.50

Example 1 A DVD normally costs $22. This week it is on sale for 25% off the original price. What is the sale price of the DVD? Method 2: Subtract the percent of the discount to 100%. 100% - 25% = 75% Let s, represent the sale. Part = percent x whole s = 0.75 x 22 s = 16.50 The sale price of the DVD is $16.50

On your own A shirt is regularly priced at $42. It is on sale for 15% off of the regular price. What is the sale price of the shirt?

Example 2 A boogie board that has a regular price of $69 is on sale at a 35% discount. What is the sale price with 7% tax? Step 1: Find the amount of the discount. Let d represent the discount Part = percent x whole d = 0.35 x 69 d = 24.15 Step 2: Subtract the discount from the regular price. $69 - $24.15 = $44.85 Step 3: The percent of tax is applied after the discount is taken. 7% of $ = 0.7 (44.85) = 3.14 = $47.99 The sale price of the boogie board including tax is $47.99.

On your own A CD that has a regular price of $15.50 is on sale at a 25% discount. What is the sale price with 6.5% tax?

Example 3 A cell phone is on sale for 30% off. If the sale price is $239.89, what is the original price? The sale price is 100% - 30% or 70% of the original price. Let p represent the original price. Part = percent x whole = 0.7p = p The original price is $342.70

On your own A cell phone is on sale for 60% off. Find the original price if the sale price of the cell phone is $
