1 Work Experience Year 10

2 Who’s who in Work Experience
employed.im – Lorna Trevethan & Carrie Yates Lorna is the General Manager of employed.im and Carrie is the Work Experience Coordinator for the island. Carrie will liaise with all the 5 local High Schools and employers to find suitable work experience placements for students. They also check that the placements are safe and appropriate for students to go to. School – Mr Lillie & Mrs Pugh You should speak to Mr Lillie or Mrs Pugh if you have any queries about work experience. They are your first point of contact, and will provide you with any forms that you need and answer any questions you may have.

3 The system – www.employed.im
Employed.im is a careers portal that can be used at any stage in your life. We use the portal to coordinate the work experience programme on the island. You will be able to store your CV and other documents that you may need in the future securely on the site and carry them through the rest of your future career. There is a lot of useful information on the site, not only about work experience but all aspects of careers and getting a job.

4 You will login here You will have already been shown how to log onto the system, and shown how to use the system You will have to login to the system to be able to access work experience placements and your own profile. You will only be able to see work experience opportunities that are available to your school.

5 What is Work Experience?
It is an opportunity to find out what the world of work is like, and to test-drive a career you’re interested in pursuing. During work experience you will not only be able to try out the job, but also find out what qualifications and skills you may need in order to be able to do it. There may be certain pathways which you need to make decisions on in the near future to enter a particular area of work, such as specific exam subjects or courses. It maybe that the employer suggests you can gain further relevant experience and provides you with contact details for the experience. You should ask what qualifications etc are needed, or if there are vocational paths you can follow

6 What Work Experience is NOT
Work experience is not a holiday from school. Employers and organisations invest a lot of time and effort in providing the placement opportunities. Without their support we are unable to provide you with work experience. Work experience forms part of your record of achievement, and may be referred to when you make university or other course applications. How you behave (both good and bad) on the work experience may affect your future. You are expected to adhere to normal working life for the employer. You will be given start and finish times as well as details for lunch and other breaks.

7 Work Experience – How to source a placement
Self-Placement You are encouraged to find your own placement as this is the best way to find somewhere you really want to go to. You should make an approach to the employer yourself, either by phone, letter, or in person. You must be polite and if they say no, do not take it personally. If they offer, you will need to get the self-placement form signed by the employer, your parents and sign it yourself. You should then return the form to Mrs Pugh at the school office. To find placements you should use google, or the phone directory for ideas of employers – especially if you know what industry or sector you want to get into. You may have family members or friends of family who work for companies that might be able to offer you a placement. Remember if you don’t ask you don’t get!

8 Work Experience – How to source a placement
System Placements Once the system has been opened up to you, you will be able to view the opportunities that have been offered to students at your school. You can shortlist 6 opportunities, and you must be willing to go to any of the 6 placements. You will then submit this shortlist along with a supporting statement. You will be told where you are going on 10th May You will be given a Letter of Agreement which you must take to the employer and get signed. If you do not do this you will not be allowed to go on your placement. There is no guarantee that you will get either your first or second choice, that is why it is important that you select opportunities that you are happy to go to. We want you to enjoy your experience and want it to help you decide what you want to do in the future. You may decide that you know what you want to do, but want to use the work experience week to try something different. This approach is fine as long as you are going to enjoy it!

9 Please check the Notice Board for information
I update the notice board regularly and it contains information about particular employers or placements and you should take note of these

10 Where the opportunities are listed
Once logged in you can access your school’s placement opportunities and make your shortlist

11 Please check the Placement details carefully for any specific requirements
Most employers will ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement on your first day as this is standard practice. Some employers will have specific requirements concerning dress code which must be adhered to. If you like the look of a placement you can shortlist these by clicking the “Add to shortlist” button at the bottom of the page

12 Dates for Work Experience 2018:
Work Experience Week: Monday 2nd July- Friday 13th July 2018 Seeking Self Placements: Forms are available from Mr Lillie & Mrs Pugh. You are encouraged to find your own placement from today through to Friday 2nd March 2018, which is the deadline for submitting your forms. 13 Remember First impressions count Appearance
You never get a second chance to make a good impression. You will be given a work experience log book which contains some useful hints and tips. Appearance You should dress according to the guidelines given by the employer. This will vary from employer to employer. Manners cost nothing Don’t forget to say thank you to your employer once your work experience is over. CV/Record of Achievement Don’t forget to use your log book to record your experience as it will help to form part of your CV and Record of Achievement. It’s about you! It’s your opportunity to shine, and these placements can lead to real opportunities in the future! The hints and tips cover areas such as making telephone calls, pre-placement interview conduct, what questions you should ask
