Thrombophlebitis

What is it? Thrombophlebitis is when a blood clot in a vein causes an acute swelling of that vein This swelling can occur in superficial or deep veins Typically this only affects veins of the lower extremities

How does it develop? Thrombophlebitis is caused by a blood clot
These clots can be caused by: Bed rest Extended periods of sitting or inactivity Injury to the vein Inherited blood clotting disorder

Examination Some of the common signs and symptoms:
Redness Swelling Warmth Tenderness Pain If the vein is superficial, it may appear to be red and firm to the touch

Intervention Refer out to physician for more testing:
Ultrasound Imaging Blood test Possible treatments include Medication Surgery
