McCarthy, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh Alternatively, one can exploit the inter-particle cohesive forces in order to predict/manipulate the mixing-segregation behavior Inverting the direction of segregation faster than the characteristic time of segregation can eliminate free-surface segregation When surface modification is not possible, another option is to add a “dry surfactant” that will form particle clusters that aid mixing Adding an axially-located baffle is one way to exploit the idea of flow inversion that has been demonstrated in both experiments (top) and simulations (bottom).
