Personal Privacy Right to privacy is a fundamental human right
Development of databases has led to storage of much personal information without the knowledge or permission of the individual It is often felt that even the use of names and addresses for mail shots is an invasion of privacy The Data Protection Act of 1984 grew out of concern about personal privacy

Data Protection Principles
Personal data must be processed following these principles so that data are processed fairly and lawfully obtained for specified and lawful purposes adequate, relevant and not excessive accurate and, where necessary, kept up-to-date not kept for longer than necessary processed in accordance with the subject's rights kept secure not transferred abroad without adequate protection

European Directive of 24 October 1995
Where data is to be transferred to a third party for the purposes of direct mailing, the subject must be informed and given the opportunity to require that the data be erased. Many organisations collecting personal data include a check box to be ticked if you object to your data being passed on to other organisations. Member states had three years to implement this legislation.

Registering Data Notification is a statutory requirement and every organisation that processes personal information must notify the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), unless they are exempt. Failure to notify is a criminal offence.

Sending out Mail Shots to advertise your website
Internet providers do not like you to send out advertising mailshots, your account may be limited to only being able to send to a particular number of people at a time…. Result account can be closed. If sending out to a GROUP of people NEVER put all the addresses into the CC in the website…. Use the BCC
