Warm up Carly has to water the plants every day of the week for 2 weeks. If it takes her 8 minutes a day to do this, how many minutes does she spend watering the plants? Write a number sentence and solve.
6
Think and write When might you have to add fractions in everyday life? List some possible situations.
7
Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will learn how to add fractions with like denominators. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.
8
Adding fractions with like denominators
To add fractions with like (the same) denominators, add the numerators. Write the sum of the numerators as the new numerator, and write the same denominator (carry over the like denominator). Example:
9
Simplifying fractions
Sometimes, you have to simplify fractions if both the numerator and denominator can be divided by the same number. For example, look at the fraction 2/6. Both the numerator and denominator can be divided by 2. The simplified fraction would be 1/3. Try it! Simplify 3/12. What number can both 3 and 12 be divided by? What fraction do you end up with?
10
Practice simplifying fractions
4/8 5/15 3/24 7/28 2/14 3/18

Adding fractions Add. Simplify if needed. 3/8 + 4/8 1/10 + 7/10
5/9 + 1/9 4/18 + 2/18 6/24 + 4/24

Problem 1 Two friends are painting a mural. Kara paints 1/9 of the mural. Melissa paints 2/9 of the mural. How much of the mural have they painted in all? Find the sum, and simplify if needed.
13
Problem 2 Grandma makes an apple pie. Johnny eats 2/12 of the pie and Grandpa eats 2/12 of the pie. How much of the pie have they eaten altogether? Find the sum and simplify if needed.

Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, you learned how to add fractions with like denominators. Reflection: Compare what you learned today to what you learned yesterday. How it is the same? How is it different? Homework (12-2 Practice) for one “Paw Signature” and (12-2 Reteaching & Practice) if you want two “Paw Signatures.” Website for Practice:
