1 Mobitex For governments and emergency services Rev PA1

2 Mobitex for governments and emergency services
Mobitex for governments and emergency services Used by some 150 government and emergency organizations around the world Police Ambulance Fire Department Customs Border control Civil Defense Military Security companies Rev PA1

3 Global Deployed worldwide for professional users
Global Deployed worldwide for professional users Mobitex is an advanced, digital, packet data network for wireless communications 30 public and private networks covering six continents Over 1 million professional users Very secure and reliable technology Used by around 150 public safety organizations in over 10 countries Rev PA1

4 Awareness Creates situational awareness
Awareness Creates situational awareness Increase efficiency by introducing mobile data, more can be done without growing resources Stay ahead of a developing situation Data is a more effective mean of communication than voice in certain situations Mobitex handles a wide range of data functionalities; positioning, dispatch, database access, , reporting, alarm, messaging etc Rev PA1

5 Rely A system to rely on during crisis Extremely robust
Rely A system to rely on during crisis Extremely robust No overload by other traffic – independant from voice traffic Redundancy functions gives alternative path ways for communication Overlapping coverage Temporary base station easily installed Base stations can be used autonomous Secure against intrusion Rev PA1

6 Best Combine the best of two
Best Combine the best of two Maximal redundancy with voice and data in separate networks Voice and data can be used simultaneously and independently Easier to calculate and handle capacity for voice network Advanced data functionalities with Mobitex Rev PA1

7 Crisis Cingular US and 11th September
Crisis Cingular US and 11th September Faster, more accurate and more secure vehicle dispatch than voice radio, no congestion 60% increase in traffic, 16 lost channels Mobitex alone worked perfect during the whole crisis which created an awareness of the strengths of Mobitex such as police, fire, military, Congress etc. Increased focus on security, cryptation, redundancy, crisis plans e.t.c Several thousands of new terminals quickly activated to emergency workers Rev PA1

8 Adaptable Flexible private network
Simple network structure with efficient network elements Very high operational stability resulting in low operational costs Scalable – add more resources when needed Extremely frequency efficient Many users per channel, up to 2500

9 Clever Smart design, sophisticated functions.
Clever Smart design, sophisticated functions. Network Control Center The NCC Handles all operation and maintenance tasks Network Switches, MX Routes traffic + gateway to other networks and local hosts Base stations, BRU Services a radio cell of up to 30km in diameter A Mobitex network can be configured in man different ways, from a large public network providing nationwide coverage to a small, privately owned network serving a single company or region. Mobitex Base Stations (BRU) The basic functionality for a Mobitex network is provided by a number of radio base stations and one or more switches. Each base station, just the size of a briefcase, services a single radio cell, which typically has a diameter of 20 to 30 kilometers, depending on environmental and other conditions. Together the base stations provide and area of coverage and determine the capacity of the network. Wireless devices communicate with the nearest base station but are also able to roam freely between radio cells and from one base station to another as the user’s location changes. The system operates on the 400, 800 and 900 MHz frequency bands. Mobitex Switches (MX) A Mobitex network normally contains many switches, which are organized in a hierarchy of local and regional switches, all of which are connected by fixed links. The local switch routes traffic to and from the base stations and provides connections between wireless devices and fixed terminals. Local switches also provide important gateways to other networks. In the standard network configuration, there is an X.25 port implemented directly in the local switch, but several other gateway options, including IP connectivity, are available. Network Control Center (NCC) The entire network is supervised and managed from the Mobitex Network Control Center (NCC). The NCC handles all operations and maintenance tasks, including network configuration, alarm handling, subscriber administration and billing information. Individual base stations and other network components can be reconfigured from the NCC, thus minimizing the need for costly and time-consuming site visits. For small, privately owned networks that do not require all of these functions, the management system may be hosted on a single computer. The NCC or management system is normally located at the company’s operations or dispatch center. Rev PA1

13 QAS A case from Australia The Challenge
QAS A case from Australia The Challenge Vision: to be recognized nationally and internationally as the leader in the provision of ambulance services Increasing demand for services with less resources Effectiveness: Fleet locations not actively monitored – preset posts Efficiency: Excessive voice radio traffic Rev PA1

14 QAS A case from Australia The requirements
QAS A case from Australia The requirements Totally reliable system with high capacity High level of application requirements Maximum security Scalable with significant capacity to grow Easy to add new functionality and users QAS identified the need for a reliable and secure system to locate ambulances closest to emergencies and to be able to communicate wirelessly between the vehicle and the hospitals. As an emergency service, QAS required a system with high capacity and a high level of application requirements and also demanded a private network operating on the 400 MHz frequency band for security reasons Rev PA1

15 QAS A case from Australia The solution
QAS A case from Australia The solution 350 ambulances equipped with Mobile Data Terminals Mobitex mobile data network gives control over capacity and coverage Ericsson and partners supply total solution incl. Project management, application, operations training and support QAS sought to overcome the limitations of the CAD systems by acquiring an Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) solution and a separate Mobitex mobile data network to provide data communications to its fleet and assure that the recommendations of closest available units were more relevant and timely. To resolve the accuracy of data issue QAS equipped the ambulance fleet with Mobile Data Terminals The solution allows for significant vertical expansion in terms of capacity to ultimately allow for more and sophisiticated mobile data applications and potentially accomodate additional Public Safety Organisations. It gives QAS totally reliable communications with high capacity, low operational costs and high availability of the network. 4 other network suppliers were screened and evaluated in the process. Tetra, DataTac, GPRS and ???? Rev PA1
