Bell-Ringer Genetics Intro
Make a prediction: 1. If a black rabbit and white rabbit mate, what color would their offspring be? 2. If we cross a red rose and a white rose, what color rose would result? 3. If we cross a small plant and tall plant, what height would result? 4. If your Mom has hairy knuckles and your Dad has hairless knuckles, what type of knuckles would you have?
2
Monohybrid Cross h h H h Hh Hh 50% of the offspring will be hairy &
50% will be hairless. hh hh
3
Dominant VS. Recessive Dominant Gene: gene whose trait always shows itself (Hairy knuckles). Recessive Gene: gene of a trait that is hidden when the dominant gene is present (Hairless Knuckles).
4
Genotype VS. Phenotype Genotype: (GENES) the two letters that make up a trait (HH, Hh, hh) Phenotype: what the letters stand for (Hairy knuckles, Hairless Knuckles)
5
Homozygous VS. Heterozygous
Homozygous: a trait made up of the same letter--said to be purebred (HH, hh) Heterozygous: a trait made up of a dominant and recessive gene (Hh) HYBRID
