Serve a Healthy Plate! 2nd Grade
In this lesson, students will evaluate the usefulness of websites about healthy foods and learn how to serve a healthy plate. Students will create a Public Service Announcement to teach others to eat healthy meals. Before the lesson: Post to Google Classroom: Research Guide (make a copy for each student); Link to (Blastoff game) Link to Book Creator 2nd Grade

Let’s do some research online! We want to know…
Which food groups make up a healthy plate? Which foods are in each food group? How can you serve a healthy plate? Read and discuss with students.

How do we know if a website is useful?
Does it have information on your topic? Can you read and understand the site? Do the links work? Does it help you get the information you need? Read and discuss the questions that help us to evaluate the usefulness of a website. View the website again. Have students discuss and answer the questions based on this website. (Note: There are no right or wrong answers. Students can explain why they think that this website is useful or not.)

You do some research! Does it have information on your topic?
Can you read and understand the site? Do the links work? Does it help you get the information you need? Get your Research Guide from Google Classroom to do your research. Students access the Research Guide that you posted on Google Classroom. They click the links in the chart, view the websites, and determine if they are useful. [Leave this slide open on the Promethean Board so that students can view the questions as they evaluate sites.] They will also answer the questions at the bottom of the research guide.

Let’s help others serve a healthy plate!
Use Book Creator to make an e-book about healthy eating. Students will create an e-book to help others choose healthy foods. Guide students to click the link to Book Creator that you posted in Google Classroom and to log in with Google. (Do not create a new account.)
