BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER…. Leader: Ask group members to “summarize” events in the story so far, up to the point where y’all were supposed to read to…. This gets everyone on the “same page”

10 Minutes Open Discussion & Questions
My favorite part so far was when…. Does anyone know…? Can someone explain the part when… What did you all think when _____ happened? Why did…? I couldn’t believe it when….
10
Specific Novel Questions
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Here’s the satire coming into play- what seems to be the REAL job of President Z. Beeblerox? How is this a political commentary on heads of state? The Alchemist: What seems to be the importance of dreaming in the novel? If it’s a metaphor being developed, what might it be a metaphor for? Hmmm…… 1984: What eerie parallels do you see to today’s world in lifestyle, concerns & technology? When did he write this?!? Fahrenheit 451: Compare Clarisse and Mildred while considering this quote: “You’re one of the few who put up with me. That’s why I think it’s so strange you’re a fireman, it just doesn’t seem right for you somehow” The Life of Pi: Religion / religious philosophy is clearly an underlying theme. How do you see Martel developing this in the beginning, especially while Pi is growing up in Pondicherry, India? What does his name mean and how might it connect with a popular religion?
