What is Statistics? Statistics is the science of collecting, summarizing, and analyzing data. Statistics helps us to understand the variability and uncertainty of our world Statistics gives us the tools to make informed decisions from data about our world

Statistics are valuable in a variety of fields such as
Who needs statistics? Statistics are valuable in a variety of fields such as Medicine Government Education Agriculture Business Law
5
Descriptive Provides summaries of data in: Graphical form
6
Descriptive Summaries can also be numerical Mean = 18.4 Minimum = 11
Standard Deviation = 2.3 Median = 17 IQR = 6.5 Maximum = 26.5 Proportion = 7/26
7
Inferential Set of procedures that allow us to draw inferences about a population from a sample Two Methods Confidence Intervals Hypothesis Testing
8
Confidence Intervals Method that allows the researcher to estimate a population characteristic using the data obtained from a sample Researcher chooses both the level of confidence and precision used in calculating the estimate.
9
Hypothesis Testing Method that allows a researcher to determine the probability of a sample producing a characteristic value given empirical information. Method that allows a researcher to compare groups to determine if differences exist.
10
Statistics Statistics is a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data
11
Regardless of the field you choose to work in, you will be a consumer of information.
This means that we can all benefit in understanding more about the statistics that are used in many fields every day.
