3. What is deviance?
Behaviour that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society
Can be an impetus for social change
Minor instances of deviance occur frequently
A deviant is someone who has violated one of the valued standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society (i.e. Hippies)

4. What makes something deviant?
Standards of deviance vary
-culture (i.e. Sioux culture)
-location (i.e. Church)
-Age (i.e. Crying at Fortino’s)
-Social Status (i.e. Celebrity)
DO! Brainstorm a list of deviant behaviour based on these criteria

5. Who is deviant? Do not necessarily need to act in a deviant manner
Appearance/trait/physical ability may distinguish them from other people in society—may be hard to present a positive image to others (i.e. Joseph Merrick, The Elephant Man)

6. Deviance and social change
Society labels people to devalue certain groups—called stigma
Violations of norms are dealt with through social control
Stigmas can change over time—may become mainstream (i.e. Piercings and tattoos)

7. Dealing with Deviance: Social Control
2 broad types of social control:
-internal social control—developed during socialization process; is within you
-external social control—social sanctions—may be positive (i.e. smiles) or negative (i.e. Criticism, imprisonment)

8. Types of External control
Informal sanctions—rewards or punishments that can be applied by most members of a group (i.e. Thanking someone, gossiping about someone)
Formal sanctions—imposed by people who have special authority (i.e. Judges, teachers)

9. Violating sanctions for social change
Sometimes groups challenge social norms and face informal and/or formal sanctions to effect change
