3 Is pregnancy and giving birth life threatening?
Not usually in Australia but every day around the world, approximately 800 women die from complications in relation to pregnancy and childbirth Most are preventable, e.g.: Severe bleeding Infections Complications from unsafe abortions 86% of maternal deaths are is Sub Saharan Africa and Southern Asia. 2 countries account for 1/3 of total global maternal deaths: Nigeria (19%) and India (15 percent).

In 2001, the UN member states formally adopted the United Nations Millennium Development Declaration and its eight goals, which set out targets aimed at improving social and economic conditions in the world’s poorest countries by 2015.

The three overarching themes are: 1. to end poverty, 2. protect the planet and 3. ensure prosperity for everyone over the next 15 years. Each of the 17 goals has a number of targets to be met. The SDGs apply to all countries, which was also the intention of the MDGs; however, the MDGs became targets for poor countries to achieve with finance from wealthier countries. The SDGs apply to all countries. These were changed in 2015 to the sustainable development goals and increased in number to 17

Countries such as Cambodia, Rwanda and Timor Leste have achieved this in the past 15 yrs.
