Figure 1 The Role of Eosinophils in IL-23-GM-CSF-Eosinophil-Driven Inflammation IL-5 is the major mediator of eosinophilic disease in allergy. IL-5 promotes eosinophil release from the bone marrow and enhances eosinophil response to eotaxin while Th2 cell cytokines sustain eosinophil activation at the mucosa. In contrast, during colitis, IL-5 is required for eosinophil trafficking to the intestinal mucosa but eosinophil activation is sustained by GM-CSF secreted from Th17 cells.
