In this lesson, you will compare decimals to hundredths with models and using place value. Then you will order decimals using greater-than and less-than symbols.

8. Comparing decimals
When you compare decimals, you have to compare the digits in the greatest place value. For decimals, tenths is the greatest place value. This means that .68 is greater than .59 because 6 tenths are more than 5 tenths.
If the decimals have the same number of tenths, move to the hundredths place. If they have the same hundredths as well, move to the thousandths place, and so on.
Example: > 4.893

10. Ordering decimals
When you order decimals, you have to look at the greatest place value. Whichever decimal has the greatest tenths place digit is the largest. If the tenths are the same, move to hundredths, and so on.
Example: Order 3.12, 3.18, and 3.11 from least to greatest.
