1 Title of Notes: Integers and Absolute Value
Pg. 3, 4, & 5 RS

2 Pick a vocabulary word and write the definition. Chapter 3
Bell work – 5 minutes Pick a vocabulary word and write the definition. Chapter 3

3 Review: order of operations
Order of operations is the order in which you solve a math problem with many components. The first rule of order of operations is P.E.M.D.A.S. Don’t forget to solve the problem from left to right!

4 P l e a s E x c u s e M y D e a r A u n t S a l y

5 Parentheses The first step of the order of operations is parentheses.
Ex. (3 x 6) = 18 Ex. (3 x 6) + 2 = 20 á = 20

6 Exponents The second step of the order of operations is exponents.
á 52 = 25 Ex. 3 + (3 + 2)2 = 28 á = 28

7 Multiplication The third step of the order of operations is multiplication. Ex. 6 x 4 = 24 Ex. (3-2)2 x 4 = 4 á 1 x 4 = 4

8 Division The fourth step of the order of operations is division.
Ex. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Ex. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) = 22 á = 22

9 Addition The fifth step of the order of operations is addition.
Ex = 9 Ex ÷ 2 = 4 á 3 + 2 = 4

10 Subtraction The last step of the order of operations is subtraction.
Ex. 16 – 4 = 12 Ex. 18 – (2 + 2)2 = 2 á = 2

12 Integers Integers are all of the positive and negative whole numbers. There are no fractions or decimals that are integers. ….. -3, -2, -1, , , 2, 3 … Negative Direction Positive Direction

13 Positive Integers Are to the right of zero
Are valued greater than zero. Express ideas of up, a gain above, or a profit. The sign for a positive integer is (+), however the sign is not always needed. Meaning +4 is the same value as 4.

14 Negative Integers Are to the left of zero Are valued less than zero.
Express ideas of down, below, or a loss. The sign for a negative integer is (-). This sign is always needed.

15 Graphing Integers on a number line
Draw a number line Graph an Integer by drawing a dot at the point that represents the integer. Example: -6, -2, and 3

16 Graphing Integers on a number line
Graph -7, 0, and 5 Graph -4, -1, and 1

17 Order Integers from Least to Greatest
You need to know which numbers are bigger or smaller than others, so we need to order them from least to greatest. Example: Order the integers -4, 0, 5, -2, 3, -3 from least to greatest. The order is -4, -3, -2, 0, 3, 5.

18 Order Integers from least to greatest
Order the integers 4,-2,-5,0,2,-1 from least to greatest. Order the integers 3,4,-2,-5,1,-7 from least to greatest.

19 Absolute Value Absolute value of a number is the DISTANCE to ZERO.
Distance cannot be negative, so the absolute value cannot be negative.

20 Absolute Value Evaluate the absolute value:
Ask yourself, how far is the number from zero? | -4 | = | 3 | = | -9 | = | | =

21 Opposites Two numbers that have the same ABSOLUTE VALUE, but different signs are called opposites. Example -6 and 6 are opposites because both are 6 units away from zero. | -6 | = and | 6 | = 6

22 Opposites What is the opposite? -10 -35 12 100 1 X

23 Using Absolute Value in Real Life
The graph shows the position of a diver relative to sea level. Use absolute value to find the diver’s distance from the surface.

24 Math Workbook: Vol. 1 Open to pg. 190 Complete pg. 190
On pg. 3 LS of your notebook draw the graphic organizer and complete. Complete pg We will complete pg. 194 together Tear out 193 and tape it into pg. 4 LS of your notebook. Complete 195 – 198. Tear out 195 and tape it into pg. 5 LS of notebook
