3
Rational Numbers A rational number is:
Any number that can be written as a ratio (or fraction) Rational numbers include fractions, terminating and repeating decimals, ratios, and percents.
4
Switching between Fractions and Decimals
It is important to be able to express rational numbers as both fractions and decimals. Ex: ½ = 0.5 We will use the TOGGLE button on the calculator to help us convert between the two.
5
Equivalent Rational Numbers
Until the 21st century, stock prices were recorded as fractions. Today, those prices are shown as decimals. For example a gain of $2.25 per share used to be recorded as 2 ¼. How can a loss of 5/8 per share be recorded as a decimal?
6
Try a few on your own.
7
Compare and Order Decimals
When comparing decimals, write one number under the other with the place values line up. Compare the digits in each place-value position, moving right.
8
Comparing Decimals
9
Ordering Decimals Put the following in order from least to greatest.
Ex 1: 0.04, 0.027, 0.2, 0.098 Ex 2: , -0.58, ,

Compare and Order Fractions

Comparing Fractions Visually
There are two cakes on the counter that are the same size. The first cake has ½ left. The second has 5/12 left. Which cake has more left?
12
Adding Rational Numbers
When adding two rational numbers, the sum will be the sign of the larger number. Ex: 5 + (-8) = =
13
Multiplying Rational Numbers
When multiplying two positive numbers, the product is positive. When multiplying two negative numbers, the product is positive. When multiplying a positive and a negative number together, the product is negative.

Real World Applications
In an online survey, about ¼ of teenagers go to sleep between 9 and 10PM, while 13/50 of teenagers got to sleep at 12AM or later. Which group is larger? Which operation would you use?
