research (v) diligent inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts (sample sentence) In order to properly research a topic thoroughly, several sources should be used.

source (n) any person, book, encyclopedia, or website, etc., from which information is obtained (sample sentence) John used five sources while collecting information for his research paper.

search engine (n) a computer program that searches for a topic & provides a list of documents in which they are found. (sample sentence) Google is the most often used search engine during research.

URL (abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator) a protocol for specifying an address that identifies a particular file on the Internet (sample sentence) I used the url to find an image of Niagara Falls frozen.

citation (n) the quoting of a book, encyclopedia, or website in support of a fact (sample sentence) Some college professors require students to follow the MLA citation guidelines. *see next page for example

reliable (adj) able to be trusted; dependable in achievement, accuracy, honesty (sample sentence) World Book Encyclopedia is a very reliable source of information.

valid (adj) having some foundation; based on truth (sample sentence)
Facts taken from Wikipedia are not always valid, so quoting it is not advised.

plagiarism (n) using or closely imitating the language of another author without authorization & the representation of that author's work as one's own (sample sentence) Simply copying sentences from a source is an outright form of plagiarism.

paraphrase (n) a restatement of a text or passage giving the meaning in another form; rewording (sample sentence) This paraphrase gives the reader an understanding of what the chapter is about.

outline (n) a general sketch or account, indicating only the main features, as of a subject (sample sentence) Writing an outline is a useful way to begin organizing a research paper. *see next page for example

introduction (n) a preliminary part, as of a book or report, leading up to the main part (sample sentence) My introduction needs to be revised to make it more interesting and hook the reader.

conclusion (n) the end or close; final part (sample sentence)
A good conclusion should leave the reader with something to think about.

thesis (n) the main points of a topic being covered in an essay
(sample sentence) Your thesis statement was so detailed that I knew what details you would be discussing in your research paper.

sequencing (n) a following of one thing after another; succession
(sample sentence) It is easy to chronologically sequence the battles during the Civil War.

chronological (adj) arranged in order of time or occurrence
(sample sentence) It is helpful for a biography to be written in chronological order.

bibliography (n) a list of source materials that are used or consulted in the preparation of a work (sample sentence) His research paper cites 12 sources in its bibliography.
