Objectives: Understand the purpose of a medical or scientific abstract. Recognize the three distinct types: a research study or a case vignette or case series. Quality Improvement Recall the contents of an abstract. Tools: dos and don’ts, checklists & examples.

Purpose: The 4 Cs for Abstracts Complete
it covers the major parts of the research Concise it contains no excess wordiness or unnecessary information Clear it is readable, well organized, and not contain too much jargon Cohesive it flows smoothly between the parts. Concise – between 200 – 500 words. Read the competition guidelines. No abbreviations in the title.

Observational – prospective or retrospective Cohort or case-control Interventional (RCT, etc.) or Case Vignette Rare disease or Unusual presentation

Describe the issue / problem (Root-Cause analysis) Processes used to solve the problem (PDSA) Who was involved (interdisciplinary) Report results Discuss maintenance or future plans
