1. STARTER TASK: If you are female:
You are LM - write a diary entry which outlines your daily life in the castle – look at your gender context notes on what it meant to be a woman in the Jacobean period. Consider also that your husband is away at war. Explore your feelings at this time.
IF YOU ARE MALE:
You are M - Write a letter to your wife outlining the events of the war and the most recent things which have happened to you. Remind yourself of the gender context notes on what it meant to be a man in the Jacobean period.

2. TASK:
Swap your text with a student of the opposite sex & read without any discussion
If you are female: write a letter in response to Macbeth’s letter to you
If you are male: write your diary entry in response to Lady Macbeth’s diary entry

3. FEEDBACK
Create a venn diagram mindmap on A4 which shows the concerns & feelings of each character as you listen to the feedback from the rest of the class – leaving the middle section clear

So, what expectations might we have of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and their relationship before we study Act 1 Scene 5?

4. Let’s see… As we read Act 1 Scene 5, look carefully at:
The way Macbeth writes to his wife – she reads a letter he has written to her aloud
Her reaction – shown in her following soliloquy
Their relationship once they are together at the end of the scene
How has Shakespeare presented their relationship and does it conform to our expectations of Jacobean gender stereotypes?
