7. A Summer of Painting
Mr. Rodriguez walked to the front of the class on the first day of school. “The first thing I ask students each year is what they did this summer,” Mr. Rodriguez said, “Who would like to volunteer?”
Josie had hoped this question was coming. She could not wait to tell everyone about her summer. Her older brother Hector was an artist. She had helped him paint a mural on the wall of the community center.

Josie's hands shot up. She had worn her painting uniform so everyone could see how she had spent her summer. Josie explained that the yellow dots that covered her blue jeans came from painting the sun. Her friend Steven asked about the gray swipes on her jeans and purple t-shirt. “Those are the dolphins we painted. Or at least, that’s the color we used,” Josie said. Then she took of her white cap and showed the beautiful green spots on it. “this is the sea,” she said.
“I am very impressed,” Mr. Rodriguez said. “Is your brother an artist?”
Josie nodded excitedly. “Maybe you will be an artist, too.”

Different parts of a book give different information, know what type of information is in each part helps a reader know where to search. The table of contents shows how the book is organized and where chapters and other parts begin. When a reader is looking for a particular topic in a book, the table of contents is a good place to being.

The table of contents lists all the selections in the book. I’ll look down the list until I find the selection title. I’ll look across to see the page number it begins on.

The title tells me that this could be a story about space. As I read the introduction, I realize that the selection is an excerpt from – or part of – a larger piece of writing. As I read further, I learn that Buzz Aldin is part of an astronaut team that landed on the moon. Because the author is writing factual information about his life, this nonfiction piece is called autobiography.
