2 What is a play? Discuss what you think the main characteristics are of a play. What makes a play distinct from prose and poetry? What plays are you already familiar with? What are your expectations of studying a play?

3 Things to remember A play is written to be performed rather than read.
Think about the visual elements such as set, actions and movements. Think about the aural quality including sound effects, music and the pace and rhythm of dialogue. Be aware of dramatic elements. Remember: A play has an audience not readers. Refer to the text as a play, not a book. You will need to consider how actors and directors have interpreted the play and be able to critically evaluate these.

4 Putting it into practice
We will now watch two different interpretations of Macbeth. Consider how each director and the actors have interpreted the play. Compare their dramatic elements. Identify how they are different and similar Evaluate each critically.

6 Homework Compare and contrast the two scenes you have watched.
Consider their different performances, visual and aural elements and their use of dramatic effects.
