1 The Scientific Method

2 Seven Steps of the Scientific Method
State the Problem Collect Information Hypothesis Test the Hypothesis Observe & collect data Results Conclusion

3 State the Problem What you want to know?
Ex: Which liquid will heat to 70° quicker water, molasses or jello?

4 Collect Information Gather as much information as possible.
Ex. We went to internet site to see which object would absorb heat faster

5 Hypothesis Educated guess/Prediction/What you think will happen
Ex. I think water will boil faster because its molecules are not as closely packed together.

6 Test the Hypothesis Experiment Our experiment
Place 3 different substances on the stove Place a thermometer in each substance Wait & observe temps at different times

7 Identify b) Depending variable Independent variable
• The variable that I change Ex. Types of substances water, jello, molasses b) Depending variable • What your measuring/the measurement Ex. Temperature of different substances c) Control in the experiment • Our comparison/item that gets no treatment Ex. 3 samples that don’t get heated just leave them d) Constants in the procedure • Things that are kept the same Ex. Same stove, same pot, same size/amount of samples, same eye on stove

8 Observe & Collect Data Watch experiment and collect data in a chart *only your data Water Jello molasses 5 min 35 30 32 10 min 48 38 43 15 min 70 53 67

9 Results Everyone’s Data Students Jello Water Molasses Cody 32 min
Time it took to reach 70° Students Jello Water Molasses Cody 32 min 16 min 23 min Amber 34 min 15 min 26 min Haleigh 33 min 24 min

10 Conclusion Tell if your hypothesis was right or wrong
Ex. My hypothesis was right because water reached 70° first.
