FALL is a season of Transformations : CATHY JONES, Math Instruction Specialist Center for Mathematics and Science Education Arkansas NASA Education Resource Center 346 N. West Avenue, Room 202 Fayetteville, Arkansas 72701 (479) (479) (FAX) Web: cmase.uark.edu Wiki: cmasemath.pbworks.com Supplies: Copies of slide 3 on Fall colored paper, color copies of slide 4, craft sticks, scissors, stapler, & glue. Extension: Paper towel rolls or brown/tan construction paper or card stock, & fall colored chenille pipe cleaners.

FALL is a season of Transformations Shapes with Line Symmetry have a line or a fold that makes two reflecting parts. Looking at symmetrical sides, each side will look exactly the same and each point will have a corresponding reflection point on the other side.

3 Print the next slide onto fall colored paper so it can be folded on the dotted line. Cut on the solid lines. DO NOT cut on the dotted line. Unfold the paper to see the finished leaf. Discuss the symmetry & line of symmetry. To decorate, place items that might be found on leaves on each side of the fold, making it symmetrical (see last slide). Staple a craft stick to it, to make a fan. Extension: Tape a pipe cleaner on the fold, as the stem of the leaf. Tape four or six of these leaves to a paper towel cylinder or rolled piece of brown card stock paper. Continue the discussion of symmetry, by placing the same amount of leaves on both sides of the tree. Connect this to your science lesson by saying that due to wind, parasites, etc. trees are not usually symmetrical. Leaf Symmetry
