3 Brief History South Africa was a colony of the British Empire.
British entered South Africa in 1795 Received Limited Self-Rule in 1910. Became independent country within the British Commonwealth in 1931.

7 Bantu Authorities Act (1951)
Established Homelands Separate tribal states were set up just outside major cities

8 Political Rights Political Rights restricted to a region
Blacks COULD NOT live in White areas - the majority black population would live here. Homelands left to govern themselves You were a citizen of a homeland, not So. Africa

9 Pass Act Laws required non-whites to carry documents authorizing their presence in restricted areas. Reason: To limit contact between the races denied non-white participation in national government.

Blacks Population: 4. 5 Million 25% of National Population Whites owned 87% of land Included ALL 17 major cities in South Africa  10 States Created: 9 for blacks and 1 for whites Population: 19 Million 75% of National Population Could only live on 13% of land.

Families must relocate

Extension of University Education Act – Forbade non-Europeans to English speaking universities Separate universities  Segregation of schools, hospitals, neighborhoods.
