1 Heat Capacity Heat capacity 200J/K Heat capacity 300J/K
Heat capacity is the heat required to increase the temperature of a body by 1 Kelvin. It cannot be used as a comparison of heating ability as the mass of the body will also affect the heat required.

2 Specific Heat Capacity
This is the heat required to change the temperature of 1 Kg of a substance by 1 Kelvin. C = specific heat capacity E = heat energy M = mass in Kg ΔT= change in temperature Unit : J/KgK

3 Substance Air 1000 Aluminium(Al) 904 Water 4200 Argon(Ar) 520 Oil 380
JK-1kg-1 Air 1000 Aluminium(Al) 904 Water 4200 Argon(Ar) 520 Oil 380 Carbon Dioxide(CO2) 843 Copper(Cu) 383 Gold(Au) 129 Helium(He) 5200 Hydrogen(H2) 14300 Iron(Fe) 449 Lead(Pb) 127 Mercury(Hg) 139

4 How much energy is needed to increase the temperature of the following by 10oC.
a) 2kg of water b) 8Kg of copper c) 2 Kg of oil 2. Calculate the rise in temperature when 500g of water is given 300J of energy. 3. What energy is released when a 30 Kg bath of water cools by 15 oC? If this heat is absorbed by the 800g of air in a bathroom, how much does the temperature of the air increase?
