1 Predicting Products of Single Replacement Reactions

2 Predicting products First you must determine if a reaction will occur. there are 2 rules

3 #1) Active metals (above H2) on the Activity Series , will always form H2(g) gas when reacted with an acid. Cu + HCl  Mg + HCl 

4 Cu(s) + HCl(aq)  NR Mg + 2HCl  H2(g) + MgCl2
copper is below H2 on the activity series and there will be no reaction. Mg + 2HCl  H2(g) + MgCl2 Mg is above H2 and will react to form H2 and a solution of the leftover cation and anion.

5 #2 type of SRR reacting a metal with an ionic (aq) Solution
The free metal (single) must be more active than the metal in the compound it reacts with

6 Same thing w/ non-metals
The diatomic non-metal must be stronger than the non-metal bonded in the compound

7 Favorable or Un? & what are the products?
AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s)  Cu(NO3)2(aq) + Ag(s) 

8 Spon or Non? & what are the products?
AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s)  CuNO3 + Ag Copper is a more active metal (higher) than Ag and will be able to steal the NO3- away Cu(NO3)2 + Ag  NR Silver is not able to steal nitrate away from Ag

9 Spon or Non? & what are the products?
Al(s) + MgCl2(aq)  AlCl3(aq) + Mg(s) 

10 Spon or Non? & what are the products?
Al + MgCl2  NR Aluminum is not strong enough to steal Cl away from Mg. Al is lower on the activity series than Mg. 2AlCl3 + 3Mg  3MgCl2 + 2Al Mg is stronger than Al and will steal Cl away.

11 Spon or Non? & what are the products?
KCl(aq) + F2(g)  KF(aq) + Cl2(g) 

12 Spon or Non? & what are the products?
2KCl(aq) + F2(g)  2KF + Cl2 KF(aq) + Cl2(g)  NR
