Physical and Chemical Properties
2
MATTER Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass – the amount of matter in something Volume – the amount of space something occupies Which of the following is matter? A car? A box? You?
3
What is a Chemical? Everything in the world that isn’t energy is a chemical or is made up of chemicals!!! Our bodies are made up of chemicals Oxygen Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen Many others
4
What is a Physical Property?
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed
5
Examples of Physical Properties
Luster: How shiny something is. Malleability: The ability to be hammered into a thin sheet Ductility: The ability to be stretched into a wire
6
Examples of Physical Properties
Melting point: Temperature at which a solid turns to liquid Boiling point: Temperature at which a liquid turns to gas Density: The mass of a given volume of a substance
7
Examples of Physical Properties
Solubility: Ability to dissolve Hardness: Resistance to being scratched Viscosity: How easily a liquid flows State: Is it solid, liquid or gas at room temperature?
9
Chemical Properties Chemical property: describes the behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance. Examples: Flammability/combustibility Ability to rust Reactivity with vinegar
