Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory
SCH3u/4C Ms. Richardson
2
VSEPR VSEPR theory is used to predict the geometric shape of the molecules based on the electron repulsive force
3
VSEPR The shapes of molecules are determined mainly by the electrons surrounding the central atom
4
Shape Determination Count the total number of valence electrons
Divide total electrons by 2 to give the total number of electron pairs Determine the shape based on the number of bonding and lone pairs
5
Linear Shape formed when there are two bonded atoms and no lone pairs.
6
Bent Forms when there are two bonded atoms with either 1 or two lone pairs around the central atom.
7
Trigonal Planar Shape that forms when there are three bonded atoms and no lone pairs.
8
Tetrahedral The shape formed when there are 4 bonding atoms with no lone pairs
9
Trigonal Pyramidal Shape formed when there are three bonded atoms and one lone pair around the central atom.
