For this investigation you will:
Examine the ABIOTIC factors that affect how a log will decompose Rate the decomposition of a log based on given descriptions Identify organisms that assist in the log’s decomposition Be introduced to the concept of cycling of matter

BIOTIC FACTORS TO LOOK FOR:
Animal burrows Woodpecker holes

Bracket Fungi may also be seen

Look for the white & yellow threads of fungi under the rotting logs
As well as moss that may be growing on the logs

Other decomposers such as…
Millipedes Centipedes Sow Bugs Slugs May also be found!

Various mushrooms, puff balls and lichens may be found….
…as well as salamanders, baby spiders and insect larvae. A rotting log provides a home for many!!

Even small mammals may be found in or under a rotting log!
Such as Voles, Mice & Chipmunks

…And do a good job of measuring the ABIOTIC factors as well!
So….be aware of all of the BIOTIC factors that may be found in or around your rotting log… …And do a good job of measuring the ABIOTIC factors as well!
