Estuary waters The total mass of salt in the estuary is called its salt load. The concentration of salt dissolved in the water is the salinity – which is measured in grams of salt per litre of water, often abbreviated to parts per thousand (ppt) Freshwater gains to the estuary come from direct rainfall, from the river catchment areas and from groundwater discharging from the eastern sand aquifers Freshwater losses are through evaporation from the large water surface, and as outflows to the sea As the estuary water-level rises and falls, so its volume, respectively, increases or decreases
